Soli Deo Gloria!
ReplyDeleteRejoicing to see how the Lord allowed Uncle George a clear mind and strength to minister the Gospel until He took him home on Saturday.

I have often reflected on the long term faithfulness of Brother George. I look forward to talking more with him in heaven. I know he will be there and we can share eternal joy together!
ReplyDeleteGeorge Black officiated our wedding 29 years ago. It was his only North American wedding. He was here on "retirement". That's funny, considering he returned to ministry in Chile for nearly 3 more decades! While he and Letty were here they were an inspiration to Jenni and me with her missionary background and my pastoral ministry. We went on to have 6 kids to add to David, the son of Jenni's first husband killed in Turkey. George and Letty both had an amazingly unassuming way about them that made you want to listen and learn from them. While we hadn't seen them in many years, it was great seeing George's 101st birthday video. Our thanks to all in Copiapo who helped them both as they approached their final days. What a day of rejoicing it will be when we're all together again in the presence of the Lord!

Uncle George was always encouraging in his dealings with missionaries. Our children thought the world of him, Joyce remembers how he liked to call her "Sunshine Susy." Those oatmeal breakfasts must have been a good influence on his system! The song "Finally Home" beautifully applies to him. He must have had a real "abundant entrance" (2 P 1:11) when all the Heavenly Centros gathered around the "Pearly Gates" when someone joyfully called out, "Hey everyone, George is about to arrive!" Some probably snorted, "Well, it's about time." Our time will come, either individually, or all together at that great trumpet sound. Til then, let's keep dear George as a wonderful example of faithfulness to the Lord. Cliff Truman
ReplyDeleteAlice and I met George and his wife Letty, he called her Bunny, in the late 1950's. We had the joy of fellowship with them both here at home and in Chile. We traveled up to Copiapo to visit them and he took us to see the local sights. We parked near the "Pepper Tree". I have a picture of him witnessing to the young man who you gave a tip to, to guard the car. Never missed an oppotunity!! He had once sold Ford's and always sid that there must be something good about me because I liked Fords! His councel will be missed. Cal Arnold
ReplyDeleteThough our contact with Uncle George was always limited because of proximity(he was in Chile and we were in Argentina), his knowledge of our ministry and acquaintance with with events and milestones in the lives of our children not only demonstrated how sharp he was, but that he cared and prayed for us. At conference he usually greeted us with a statement that made us know that he was reading our updates. Administratively, it was always my observation that Uncle George was the first to consider or suggest making changes - sometimes very significant changes. We only entertained Uncle George one time in our home when living at the Mission in Temperley. At the time a retired couple from Maine was there for a six month short term helping with building projects. Each morning Uncle George marched up the hallway singing "hail Pennsylvania"!!! He liked our visitors so well he insisted they must be from Pennsylvania and always asked, "now, what part of Pennsylvania are you from?"
ReplyDeleteUncle George's example of humility and godliness will be profoundly missed.
In Memory of George Black:
ReplyDeleteThere are a few men who have had a great impact on our lives who's life we would seek to emulate. Most all have gone to their reward as has our dear brother, George Black. We, being new on the block have met him but a few times, but his presence was known simply by his walk with the Lord. What he said was always profound in terms of spiritual depth while having no air of being pontifical. He has set the bar very high for the rest of us, who seek to serve the Lord. Our departed brother did not have to strain to share his Master because the Master lived His life through Him, no longer I, but "Christ liveth in me", was his life lived in word and in deed. May his example continue to inspire us who would seek to have Christ live His life through us.

Pastor Black will be fondly remembered by us as one who happily and willingly gave his life to the service of Christ. He deeply cared for us, our children and even Marie's parents. He made deep impressions upon them. Josh was teaching here recently and he used the little poem Ps Black taught him when he was around 8 years old

Do it right away
Don't stop to think about it
Hurry to obey
He was a leader in missions and one we desire to follow. Marie's even used his story to teach the children here about missions. We thank God for this man and for what God can do with one who is truly given over to Him.
May the Lord bless,

I feel sooo very blessed to have known Uncle George and Auntie Letty. I hope the memory of him praying, including the sound of his voice, is never lost to me. When we moved to BC, everything reminded me of my dad. I realized that I had not really grieved his loss, but had mainly grieved for my mom's great loss. When the tears flowed, and my heart could not be lightened, I turned to Uncle George who was Dad's best friend. Uncle George gladly filled the gap for me and blessed me immeasurably once again with his wit, his stories, his prayers and his love. I know I stand side by side many "children" that God gave to Uncle George and Auntie Letty over the years. I, and we, are sooo blessed!

My early rememberances of Uncle George are the special love he had for Aunty Letty. As she was hard of hearing, he always made sure she was aware of all that was said and what was going around her. I remember his sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteIn later years, he was a great encourager to me and my family. I found a card he sent to my dad, Paul McSparran, when he was sick. It was full of words of encouragement. When Dad died and then my husband died and I had cancer, he gave me much encouragement.
He is a challenge to me as I heard he was memorizing large portions of Scripture and wanting to spend more time in prayer.
He told me several stories he remembered of my parents and our family.
He will greatly missed, but what glory it is for him! Sally (McSparran) Flatebo
ReplyDeleteI first met George and Letty when working with the Anglican mission in Chol Chol Chile, in the 1950´s.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I remember they spent a week with us there for the purpose of an evangelistic campaign.
George was a real Christian gentleman and Letty such a gentle lady...
They made a lasting impression on us all.
I met George again in the 90´s at the Bradenton Missionary Village and was blessed to experience him as a great encourager...
He was a great man. Truly Christ-like.
Thanks be to God.
